Working with parents

Being a parent of a child with emotional, behavioural or mental health issues can be lonely, overwhelming and stressful. I am here to support you as a parent and to help you become better equipped to understand and relate to your child.

Work with the parents of a child or young person in therapy is an important part of the child psychotherapy approach.

Working with parents leads to a better understanding of your child's behaviours and what they are trying to communicate. And it will help you to find new ways to respond to your child's needs, supports positive change and will strengthen relationships.

Parents are always invited for regular reviews during the course of the therapy, where the themes in the work are thought about and explored.

In some instances, we may feel that sessions for parents are the most appropriate model for the work. For example, if the child or young person cannot engage in therapy, parents can be supported to think about presenting behaviours, underlying causes and helpful responses.
